Richard (Dick) is from Winston-Salem originally. Following his high school graduation, he attended East Carolina University (ECU) where he received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1971. He studied for an additional year at ECU working on a Master of Arts Degree.
Professionally, Dick has been a licensed Nursing Home Administrator since 1982. Prior to becoming a Nursing Home Administrator, he advanced in the field of urban and regional planning including stints in Washington, D.C., Greensboro, Fayetteville and Lumberton, North Carolina. After serving as Executive Director of a health-planning agency serving southeastern North Carolina, he and his family returned to the Triad. He was recruited by Lutheran Retirement Ministries to assist in the development of Twin Lakes Center, a continuing care retirement center in Burlington, N.C. While with the Lutheran organization, he earned his Nursing Home Administrator’s license and soon entered the field of nursing home management. Within three short years, he learned that his expertise in health planning and facility consulting was in high demand. In 1985, he and his wife, Sarah, started their own long term consulting firm representing numerous clients working with nursing homes, hospitals, physicians, medical clinics and private entrepreneurs developing 30 long term care related facilities and businesses. This firm exists in the present form of Canyon Management Consultants.
The GrayBrier, located in his home county of Randolph, was the first of his facilities developed, owned and operated by himself and his family. The GrayBrier was built in 1990 and since then has been operated successfully by Dick and Sarah Bennett. The facility continuously upholds an excellent reputation serving the surrounding community as one of the very few owner-operated facilities in North Carolina.
Dick and his wife Sarah also opened a sister facility in Jamestown, NC in April 2010. This facility is The Shannon Gray Rehabilitation & Recovery Center.
